Extended Producer Responsibility
The European Union, as well as many other countries around the world, have implemented producer legislation to minimize the environmental impact when placing goods on the market.
Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is the act of ensuring that the manufacturer of a product is responsible for the product throughout its entire life cycle, including the possibility of environmentally friendly end-of-life disposal.
The EPR is an environmental protection strategy to be able to achieve the goal of reducing the total environmental impact of a product, making the manufacturer of the product responsible for the entire life cycle of the product and in particular for take-back, recycling and final disposal.
The European Union, other countries have implemented product legislation to minimize the environmental impact when placing goods on the market. Electronic equipment, for example, becomes WEEE when it enters the waste stream and must be handled properly, as do batteries and any packaging in which the products have been sold.
Each of the countries has their own methods of securing producer responsibility, from tariffs based on quantities sold, mandatory membership in a collective organization, or testing of products withdrawn by the manufacturer.
